Qualification

AQA - GCE A Level and GCE AS level

The course offers the opportunity for the study of Language and Literature. You will study a range of Pre 20th Century and modern texts, as well as an Anthology. You will write your own texts and consider purpose and audience.

You will study set texts for the effectiveness of their style and content, using skills learned in Language study and commenting on your knowledge of Literature from different historical periods.


Course Length

Two years full 'A' level. One year 'AS' level

Entry Requirements

Higher grade passes in GCSE English Language and Literature are normally required, C being the minimum grade.

Course Delivery

Candidates will engage in individual and group work. Language topics will be explored through the use of media such as newspapers, periodicals and television documentaries. You will be expected to read widely yourself to increase your awareness on topics of social, scientific, technical, political and cultural interest.

Literature texts will be explored through large groups, small groups and independent work. A variety of methods is used such as reading and discussion, role play, audio and videotaped productions of the texts. Written essays and note taking are also a feature of both aspects of the course. Theatre and cultural visits are also encouraged and organised regularly.

Assessment Method

All courses will be assessed in modules. Three modules successfully passed represent 'AS' level and a further three ('A2') represent the full 'A' level.

Modules can be assessed in January and June of Year 12 and Year 13.

 

Progression from the course

English Language and Literature is a valuable subject for progressing to Higher Education Degrees in English, Law, Language Studies, Administration, Psychology, Sociology. Education and Management would be a smooth progression for those candidates who have followed this course.

Industry and the public sector need personnel skilled in analysing and evaluating written and spoken material and in communicating ideas and information. There are many professional and career opportunities open to students of this course.
