Edexcel - A level

This course looks at current, relevant topics, such as nuclear issues, medical ethics, space exploration, communication and media, role of women, government and politics, crime and punishment, social issues, environment issues, conservation, human and natural disasters, pollution, disadvantaged groups and education.

It aims to broaden the viewpoint of students taking any combination of post-16 courses. It encourages an understanding of change in the modern world; develops study skills and powers of analysis, and requires clear, accurate and effective communication of information. It allows students to draw together strands from other areas of knowledge to achieve a more rounded picture of modern living

One year (intensive study)

Entry Requirements

GCSE English grade C or above would normally be expected.

Course Delivery

The course is taught on a modular basis by a team of teachers, using a variety of approaches. It makes use of audio-visual input; involves discussion of newspaper and magazine articles; lively debate, and exchange of ideas and information.

Essays will be set at the end of each module to monitor progress.

An inquiring mind is a must!

Assessment Method

There will be external written examinations in June 2003, testing powers of comprehension, data-handling and extended essay writing.

The AS level taken in Year 12 forms 50% of the assessment weighting for the A level.

 

Progression from the course

This subject carries the usual weighting of A level points and can be used to gain university entry on a variety of courses.

It is also a useful jumping off point for the world of work as it aims to increase confidence as well as extend knowledge.
