As a highly dynamic and academic subject Geography demands pupils who are keen to find out how they interact with the world in which they live. They syllabus offers students a revitalised perspective on Geography. The Programme of Study looks at contemporary issues in world Geography.

A study of the core themes focus on:

  • Unit 1 Changing landforms and their management
  • Unit 2 Managing change in human environments
  • Unit 3 Environmental Investigation
  • Unit 4 Global Challenge
  • Unit 5 Researching Global Futures
  • Unit 6 Synoptic Unit

AS One year/A2 One year/A Level Two years

Entry Requirements

A higher grade pass in the subject at GCSE is expected. Only in exceptional circumstances will able pupils without GCSE be accepted.

Course Delivery

The problem solving approach forms the basis of disciplined and balanced enquiry. Students will be encouraged to make informed decisions and are made aware of the need to justify choices. This challenging course makes significant demands on the student but we will equip them with the skills necessary for success in higher education and the world of work. Through presentations, group work, class discussion, residential and day field work, and A level courses we plan to meet the needs of this demanding, but rewarding course.

Assessment Method

The course is modular in nature, giving students the opportunity to complete assessments which contribute to either an AS level at the end of year 12 or a full A level at the end of year 13.

The course is assessed as follows:

  • Short structured data - response questions (unit 1 & 2) = 33.4%
  • Fieldwork investigation (Unit 3) = 16.7%
  • Structured data and stimulus, essay style questions (Unit 4) = 15%
  • Formal research based essay and coursework report (Unit 5) = 15%
  • Issues analysis exercise. (Unit 6) = 20%

 

Progression from the course

 The dynamic and skills based nature of this subject gives Geography one of the highest graduate employment rates of any non specialist degree. A level Geography is an accepted entry qualification for many specialist and non specialist higher education.
