This GCSE helps prepare candidates for a world increasingly dominated by the use of ICT systems, which influence every aspect of everyday life. Studying ICT will help provide the analytical, communication and technical skills that are needed by active participants in this exciting and dynamic world.

The course will provide an essential foundation for any further courses including those specific to the use of computers and new technology such as AS or Advanced GCE, vocational and occupational courses.

Classwork - 2 hours per week
Homework - 1 hour per week

Course Delivery

This course will be delivered through a combination of practical work using the computers and theory work.

In addition to allowing time to complete the coursework the practical time will be given over to developing the skills needed to use ICT effectively.

The theory work will allow students to learn about who uses ICT, how they use ICT, what they use ICT for and some of the legal implications resulting from the growth of ICT in society.


Assessment Method

The GCSE in ICT is assessed through a combination of coursework and examination.

Students will complete several projects during the two years which amount to 60% of the final grade. At the end of Year 11 students will sit an examination which amounts to 40% of the final grade.

The coursework projects are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learnt.

To succeed in the coursework students will need to take on the role of a software designer and produce several working ICT systems and write a report which includes:

  • an analysis of what is needed
  • designs for the new system
  • testing plans and results
  • an evaluation and a User Guide.
