Art and Design Key Stage 3
Each year during key stage 3 students work on assignments which cover practical skills in painting, graphics, 3-D / ceramics and printmaking. They also cover textiles and digital media at least once in the key stage. Assignments address a variety of underlying principles in Art & Design e.g proportion, perspective, spatial concepts, colour etc. In this way practical and intellectual skills are developed throughout the three year period. There is a strong emphasis on creativity, problem solving and developing the individual.
Assignments introduce students to a wide variety of traditional and contemporary artists. Students develop their ability to research, analyse and discuss works of art, with confidence.
Students are given opportunities to visit galleries and museums and are introduced to professional artists. They learn about the importance to society of the artist, craftsperson and designer and the impact they make on society and the environment.
In year 7 students study Art & Design for one hour each week for the whole year. For half of the year they also have an extra one hour session. This may be with one or two teachers.
In years 8 and 9 students study the subject for one hour per week.
In year 9 assignments are set which prepare students for the type of work available at GCSE level.
