Key Stage 4

Qualification

GCSE (AQA)

The Games syllabus involves assessment in four of the major games - usually those studied at KS3. There is also the opportunity to be assessed by coaches outside of school in sports like golf, cricket, swimming and horse-riding.

Students must be members of a club if they wish to be assessed by a coach other than the PE staff.

Students work towards a two hour written paper after having studied the following theoretical areas:

Individual Factors Affecting Performance

  • Physiology and Anatomy
  • Factors Affecting Performance
  • Health and Fitness
  • Safety and Hygiene

Sport and Society

  • Local and National Issues
  • Sports Council
  • International Competition
  • Sponsorship
  • Drugs

Personal Fitness Programme
Pupils will spend six weeks planning, implementing and evaluating their own fitness circuit / programme. This is coursework and as such is an integral part of their practical mark. Taking on the role of official, recorder, coach are also part of their practical grade. Students will be expected to take on these roles in core and GCSE practical physical education lessons.

Curriculum

Two hours lesson time per week.

Course Delivery

Assessment is continuous therefore students should be prepared to put in 100% effort for every PE lesson. Kit, attitude and participation are all taken into account for final assessment purposes. One lesson per week is theoretical and the second lesson will be practically based.

Homework will be set on a regular basis. A sound understanding of the rules of various sports is essential. It is advantageous if students are either regular sports participants for school and/or attend a club.

Assessment Method

60% of the marks are on practical work including understanding and performing four sports, fitness programme, rules test and different roles in PE.

( 40% of the marks are gained from the two hour theory paper).
