Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 pupils follow the 'Icons' modular programme. Icons is the new Roman Catholic syllabus which has replaced the Weaving the Web scheme.

The modular scheme which is followed aims to allow young people to explore their own experience, shared human experience and the experience of traditional belief and value systems, especially religious traditions. Pupils also study how to analyse, reflect and act upon these experiences in the family, local, plural and global contexts.

In Year 7 the course is delivered through three modules; The Living Church, Christ the Light and Becoming fully human. The modules include reflecting upon belonging to a community, learning how to read and study the Bible and looking at the person of Jesus Christ. Pupils explore prayer and worship and learn about the place of festivals in religion.
They study the values that arise out of religious belief and Hinduism as a world religion.

In Year 8 the course is delivered through three modules; Lifetimes, Living History and Here in this place. The modules include looking at different roles within the Jewish and Christian communities, analysing Old and New Testament accounts and exploring the ways of communicating with God with reference to Holy week and Easter. Pupils also learn about the responsibility for self and others.

In Year 9 the course is delivered through three modules; Faith Challenges, At the Heart of Belief and A vision for Living. The module includes looking at how conflict and adversity is experienced and dealt with. It also examines how belief can unite and divide communities. Pupils consider the Christian belief about Jesus Christ and the place of Muhammad within Islam. Pupils also reflect upon the themes of Prayer, Love and Pilgrimage.

Assessment is carried out throughout the Key Stage, a module test is taken approximately every six weeks.
